Organizers of the 2017 FotoMizen Festival want to inspire everyone on the MIzen Peninsula to document their day on Sunday 7th August. Photographs taken and submitted will be collected and assembled into a book and published in time for Christmas. So no matter what is happening anywhere on the Mizen (defined as anywhere west of Ballydehob-Durrus) a photographic record will be here! This project will illustrate our life and the area that we all know and love, a fitting celebration of our first century as a nation, an exciting chronicle for the next 100 years. So whether you are a professional, a keen enthusiast or someone with a camera phone – take part in this fascinating project. The FotoMizen Photography Festival 2017 is a new all-inclusive festival in West Cork. Bringing together all aspects of photography from capture to publication and everything in between. Experts with many different photography skills will be hosting practical and hands-on workshops, discussion panels with leading personalities will cover relevant and trending topics, photography exhibitions held and there will be plenty of opportunities to network, share your passion and learn more about the exciting world of photography.
What makes Schull Agricultural Show special is that it attracts people from throughout West Cork to mingle with the many visitors to the area at this time of year and enjoy a truly wonderful rural traditional event. The day is designed to provide fun for all ages and to display the very best in agricultural and rural life. Schull Town Park, situated in the shadow of Mount Gabriel, is an ideal venue comfortably providing for the large crowds, with three exhibition rings and a jumping enclosure catering for the horse and pony events and an area set aside for the Fun Dog Show. At the core there is the serious business of the Horse and Pony Section – 40 classes in all. The Schull Country Market relocates from its village setting for the day to provide a vast selection of food, drinks and crafts from West Cork’s artisan producers. A major attraction for children, especially those visiting from urban backgrounds, is The Pets Corner showing animals and poultry from local farms. The Vintage Tractor Display and parade, the hall exhibits which include cookery, vegetables and crafts and the food stalls ranging from barbecue to fish and chips are other special features. From 2pm, the much enjoyed Platform Dancing session with Annie and Bertie Moran, now an integral part of the day, will take place. This year’s star attraction will be The Ilen Ceili Band, winners at the Cork County Fleadh Cheoil. There will be Step and Figure Dancing displayed by local dancers together with Set, Ceili and Waltzes for everyone to join in! A free shuttle service will operate throughout the afternoon from the East End carpark, to and from Schull Town Park. The day’s events commence at 12 noon and continue till 5pm. We hope to see you all there on Sunday July 27th for what promises to be another most enjoyable day.
The inaugural Schull Blueway Kayaking Festival takes place on the weekend of 8-10 July 2016 in the village of Schull, West Cork, Ireland, along the Wild Atlantic Way. The festival offers a combination of an adventure kayaking challenge for experienced kayakers, taster sessions for beginners and children, and a family island kayak trip and BBQ with music. And of course there is the village of Schull itself and the Mizen peninsula, with all its wonderful shops, eateries and music, plenty to entertain all throughout the weekend.

This years Fastnet Triathlon will take place on the 11th of June and promises to be an exciting spectacle and a tightly fought competition. COME AND ENJOY A MEGA COUNTRY MUSIC WEEKEND IN BALLYDEHOB This year’s festival features a brilliant line up of artists performing in various venues around the village. From free gigs in the bars, a lively and fun dance workshop, to exciting star events in the community hall, it’s going to be a blast! DECLAN NERNEY will be performing on stage on Friday night supported by Kieran Cooke, and on SundayROBERT MIZZELL and Kieran Cooke are back in the hall for another great night of music. The fantastic Bar Trail features CATHY McGOVERN, MICHELLE MAGEE, Different Strings, Catriona O’Sullivan, Mike Ronan and Mike Scott Treacy. The dance nights are fiercely popular and to be sure of a place you can get your tickets here. Don’t forget to grab some raffle tickets too. The Mizen Community Partnership (MCP) is delighted to announce the launch of their new website ‘www.ourmizen.com’ on the 3rd January at 3.00pm in the Harbour Hotel, Schull. Aimed at communicating events throughout the peninsula as well as promoting the area to a national and international audience. The website, ‘ourmizen.com’ provides a platform for links and information about all things ‘Mizen’. MCP Development Officer, David Precious says the objective of the site is to create a ‘one stop shop’ for information about the Mizen peninsula. “Eventually we want to have a complete rundown of all that the Mizen has to offer with detailed information on the many events, facilities and services and of course the stories and history of the place” The website uses interactive maps to help users discover places to eat and drink, heritage sites, nature trails, and even favourite places to swim and launch small craft. Using links to community web sites and facebook pages ‘ourmizen.com’ offers a great starting point to find out about the areas surrounding Ballydehob, Schull, Goleen, Crookhaven and Mizen Head itself. All businesses, and other organisations throughout the Mizen are encouraged to send in their internet links, and a brief description to ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’. Videos, photos, and in-depth content are also welcome. MCP will also welcome blog post content from the community. Photos and comments from festivals, video clips and short essays about a favourite hill walk – all content that illustrates to the viewer how uniquely beautiful and vibrant the Mizen peninsula is will be shared.“If you send it to us we will post” says David. As the website will be constantly updated to remain fresh and current there is no deadline for new content. “We want to aim this at all travellers and the Irish diaspora world-wide to make this a busy hub of information on business, agriculture, commerce, tourism – all that Mizen has to offer.” The website is dynamic, and easy to follow. It is believed that with full participation from the Mizen community that the site will attract traffic from all over the world and eventually gain potential for generating income through advertisement and donations. UPDATE – Cork Branding Meeting – 16th October 2015 Following on from the ‘Branding Workshop’ held in May 2015 The group working on the proposed strategy for promoting Cork City and Cork County to the tourism market reported back. The findings confirmed much of the proposal previously reported. Interesting statistic 350,000 visit Blarney Castle every year. The Wild Atlantic Way is to be complemented by The Ancient East Coast. Cork is to be promoted as: ‘Ireland’s Maritime Paradise’ with a coastline seen as ‘softer’ and more ‘available’ that much of the west coast of Ireland, with a wealth of maritime stories, connections and heritage. In addition the ready availability of fresh local food, waterbourne leisure activities and a ‘creative vibe’ it is seen that Cork (City and County) should provide a multi-sensory maritime-lead experience based around :- SIGHT: SOUND: TOUCH: TASTE Cork was also described as being ‘quirky’ a factor visitors enjoy. Cork should concentrate on what it is best at and offer a single minded focus; an integrated offering: Areas that had been identified were. Contrasts Interconnectivity Food Living Culture Real Stories Global Connectivity Maritime History Inclusivity (with local people) Individual mind set Visitors tend to be independent minded and free spirited and should be welcomed into an environment that ‘rewarded curiosity’. Visitors look for the multi-sensory experience embodying cultural fusion (food, music, heritage, maritime experience). The target groups that fit the profile of Corks tourism offering are as follows: Culturally Curious – those who have a ‘warm’ feeling towards Ireland, possibly part of the diaspora, looking to engage and relate to the embedded culture and experience. Great Escapers – wanting to break away from a busy working life and looking for a place to relax but also be engaged. Social Energisers – taking part in water sports, walking, music events etc A mix of ‘footloose socialisers’ and ‘connected families’ are looking for a new experience, an opportunity to connect to the place through multi-sensory experience. A place for ‘people like me’ to be ‘part of the vibe’. The specific areas to be focused on for developing the Cork Branding program are seen as: Food, Creative Arts, Infrastructure, Investment, Operational Structure. European funding is an important part of the development plan and mention was made of a program called. ‘Harvesting Our Ocean Wealth’ or ‘HOOW’ as it was referred to. Leader funding was discussed at separate table grouping on investment and the importance of community lead initiatives in all the aspects of the Branding Proposals was noted and agreed upon. Conclusion The overall impression is of a well-defined set of objectives clearly placing ‘Maritime Paradise’ at the centre of the effort. The objectives of the Cork Tourism Branding Initiative align perfectly with the findings of the ‘Mizen Strategic Local Development Plan’ and with the objectives and opportunities of local Communities. With the deadline rapidly approaching Goleen’s entry for the Eirs (Eircom) High Speed Broadband Rollout Competition was sent over the conventional copper wire internet airways. With the chance of winning a 250,000 euro investment to connect Goleen and surrounding district to the ‘fibre optic super highway’ ahead of the Government backed program due by 2020, it was too good a chance to miss. Eirs (Eircom) are looking for a community that they can work with to demonstrate their fibre optic high speed technology and are offering to deliver to the lucky winner ,free of charge, a trial program of minimum 32mbit internet connection. When members of the ‘Goleen Community Council’ and the ‘Mizen Community Partnership’ realised that Goleen would fall outside the commercial area for high speed broadband, steps were taken to put Goleen’s name into the hat and the competition entry was put together. Eirs reports a big response to the competition so there are no guarantees of victory but at least the entry is in and as we all know. ‘If you’renot in, you can’t win.’ Fingers crossed, we’ll know the outcome this month.
